What should you know if a stye left a bump?

An active stye is often sore, red and swollen. After that inflammation improves, a firm, round lump can remain when material is trapped in an eyelid gland. This type of residual lump may be less tender and may sit within the lid rather than at the lash edge. Do not assume every persistent bump is a stye: an examination can check its position, surface and effect on the eye.

A lump that changes, bleeds, repeatedly affects the same spot or does not settle should be reviewed. Avoid rubbing it or trying to drain it at home.

Use a clean, comfortably warm compress over the closed eye for several minutes, then gently massage toward the lashes if there is no pain. Keep hands clean and stop if the skin becomes more irritated. Avoid squeezing, needles and unprescribed antibiotic or steroid eye products. Pause makeup and contact lenses while the eyelid is inflamed, and clean any discharge with fresh water and a clean pad.

If the bump affects blinking, presses on the eye or remains despite careful home care, arrange an assessment rather than repeatedly applying pressure.

Book a GP Consultation for a persistent, recurrent or enlarging bump, particularly if it changes your vision or remains uncomfortable. Seek prompt care for spreading swelling, strong pain, fever, difficulty moving the eye, light sensitivity or sudden vision change. Ongoing red eye or discharge should also be assessed instead of being attributed to the old stye.

Ask whether the remaining lump is a blocked gland, whether warm compresses are still suitable, and whether it needs a procedure or specialist review. Tell the clinician when the original soreness started, when it improved, and whether the bump has changed in size or affected sight.
