Stye inside the bottom eyelid: what to know

Because the lump is under the lower lid, you may not see a clear head. Blinking can make it feel as if something is in the eye, while the lower lid may look puffy or red. Watering, tenderness, and mild crusting are possible. Do not turn the lid inside out repeatedly to inspect it, since handling can increase irritation.

A deeper, firm, less tender lump may be a blocked oil gland rather than an active stye. Red Eye or ongoing discharge can reflect other conditions, especially if discomfort is not limited to the eyelid.

With your eye closed, hold a clean warm compress against the lower lid for roughly ten minutes. Repeat at intervals through the day. Use gentle warmth rather than heat that could burn the thin eyelid skin, and wash your hands before touching the area.

Do not pop, squeeze, or lance the inner lump. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while symptoms remain. Replace or clean eye cosmetics later, and do not share them. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief for your circumstances.

Seek urgent help if sight changes, pain is severe, light is very uncomfortable, fever develops, swelling spreads beyond the lid, or moving the eye hurts. These features are not typical simple eyelid irritation and need prompt examination.

Arrange a GP consultation if the lump persists, becomes firm, interferes with opening the eye, or returns often. Assessment is also sensible when you are unsure whether the swelling is inside the lid or on the eye itself.

Ask whether the lower-lid swelling is a stye, a blocked gland, or another problem; how long to continue compresses; and whether treatment is needed. Report contact lenses, discharge, recurrent lumps, light sensitivity, or visual symptoms.
