Stye eye swelling: what to know

A stye, or hordeolum, may appear as a red bump at the lid edge or within the eyelid. It can make one area puffy, sore, or sensitive when blinking. A small yellow or white point may form as the inflammation comes to a head. Watering and a gritty sensation can happen because the swollen lid disturbs the eye surface.

Swelling that involves the whole eyelid, the skin around the eye, or the eye itself is different from a small local lump. Note how quickly it is changing, whether vision is clear, and whether eye movement is comfortable; these details help guide triage.

Hold a clean, warm compress against the closed lid for several minutes and repeat during the day. Keep the warmth gentle, not hot. Wash hands before touching the area and clean away discharge with clean water. Resting the eye from makeup and contact lenses can reduce further irritation.

Do not massage forcefully, squeeze, or puncture the bump. Do not apply household creams or someone else’s medication near the eye. If swelling is increasing or the lid is becoming difficult to open, seek medical advice rather than continuing home treatment.

Seek urgent care for vision changes, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, pain when moving the eye, fever, or swelling that spreads into the cheek or around the eye. These features need assessment because they are not typical of a small uncomplicated eyelid lump.

Arrange a GP consultation if swelling does not settle, returns often, leaves a firm lump, or causes persistent discharge. A clinician can examine the eyelid and eye surface and advise whether another treatment or diagnosis should be considered.
