Can a stye cause swelling under the eye?

A stye often starts as a sore, focused bump near the lashes. Fluid and inflammation around that area can make the upper or lower lid look puffy, and gravity can make puffiness appear below the eye. Mild tenderness, watering, or crusting may accompany it. Swelling that is diffuse, rapidly increasing, hot, or associated with facial redness is less typical of a simple stye. Use a clean warm compress over the closed eyelid, without pressing on the eyeball. Keep the area clean, wash your hands before and after touching it, and avoid rubbing. A cool compress may briefly ease general puffiness, but warmth is usually more useful for a tender eyelid blockage.

Seek prompt medical care if swelling spreads quickly, the skin becomes hot or intensely painful, vision changes, eye movement hurts, or you develop fever or feel unwell.
