Stye bump: what to know

A stye, also called a hordeolum, forms when an eyelash follicle or nearby eyelid gland becomes blocked and inflamed. The bump may sit on the lid edge, feel sore when touched, and produce watering or crusting. A firm, less tender lump that remains after the soreness settles may be a different type of blocked gland. Apply a clean warm compress to the closed eye for several minutes and repeat it through the day. Wash hands first, keep the lid clean, and let the skin dry gently. Never pop or pierce the swelling. Avoid rubbing, contact lenses, and eye makeup until the eye is comfortable. If a product causes burning or worsening redness, stop it and ask a pharmacist or clinician for advice.

Seek urgent help if vision changes, pain is severe, fever appears, or swelling spreads beyond the eyelid. These features need examination because they can signal a problem beyond a small local stye.

Ask whether the bump is on the eyelid margin, how long to continue compresses, and whether an ongoing lump needs further examination. Mention recurrence, skin conditions, contact lenses, and any discharge.
