What should you know about a stye after lash extensions?

Lash extensions, adhesive or repeated touching can irritate the eyelid and may contribute to a tender blocked gland. A stye is usually a localised lump at the lid margin, while glue irritation may cause burning, watering or redness across a wider area. Eye discharge or a widespread red eye can point to a different problem, especially if both eyes are affected.

The timing after an appointment is useful information, but it does not prove the extension caused the lump. Do not apply more adhesive or cosmetic products while the eye is inflamed.

Wash your hands before touching the eyelid. Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eye for several minutes, repeating through the day. Do not squeeze the lump, pull at attached lashes, or use someone else’s eye drops. Stop eye makeup and contact lenses until symptoms have cleared. If extensions need removal, ask a qualified professional or clinician rather than using solvents near the eye; keep the product details available for an assessment.

Seek urgent help for vision changes, marked light sensitivity, severe pain, swelling spreading around the eye, painful eye movement, breathing difficulty or facial swelling after adhesive exposure. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are worsening, discharge persists, the lump recurs or the eye is not settling after the extensions are stopped.

Tell the clinician when the extensions were applied and which products were used. Ask whether the problem looks like a stye, surface irritation or another infection, and whether the extensions should be removed.
