What should you know about string around skin tag?

A skin tag is a soft, flesh-coloured growth that often hangs from a narrow stalk. Thread, hair, jewellery, or clothing can catch around that stalk. Tight pressure may cause tenderness, swelling, darkening, or a dry surface as the tissue becomes irritated. Those changes do not confirm what the growth is. A wart, mole, or another lesion can sometimes be mistaken for a skin tag, especially if it has changed.

Wash your hands, loosen and remove any thread without tugging, and rinse the area with clean water if the skin is broken. Keep clothing and jewellery from rubbing it. Do not tie off, burn, freeze, or cut the growth at home; bleeding and infection can follow, and an uncertain lesion may be harder to assess.
