Do stretch marks disappear?

Stretch marks, also called striae distensae, are lines that form when skin stretches or changes quickly and deeper support fibres are disrupted. New marks may look pink, red, purple, or darker than surrounding skin; older marks commonly become paler and slightly indented. Their final appearance varies with skin tone, age, location, genetics, and how long the marks have been present.

Use a plain moisturiser if the area feels dry or itchy, and protect exposed skin from sun so colour contrast is less noticeable. Creams and oils can improve comfort and softness but do not reliably restore altered texture. If you want cosmetic improvement, a dermatologist can assess whether microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling, or carboxytherapy suits the mark’s colour, depth, and location. Several sessions may be needed, and results are gradual.

Arrange a medical assessment if marks appear suddenly without an obvious stretch or growth change, cover large areas quickly, or occur with easy bruising, muscle weakness, unusual facial changes, or prolonged steroid use. Seek help sooner for pain, warmth, swelling, or a new rash rather than assuming these changes are ordinary stretch marks.
