Are Stretch Marks Permanent?

Short answer
Stretch marks are long-lasting structural changes, so they may remain visible, but many become paler and less noticeable; treatment can improve appearance without guaranteeing removal.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Over time
- Marks often become paler and flatter.
- Treatment goal
- Reduced visibility, not guaranteed removal.
How marks mature
A fresh stretch mark can be coloured, slightly raised, or itchy. Over time it often becomes lighter, flatter, and more similar to a scar. The line may still have a different texture because the deeper support layer changed when the skin was under tension. New body changes can make old marks stand out again, but that does not necessarily mean they are worsening. Stretch marks are generally harmless and do not prevent normal movement or exercise.
Ways to make them less noticeable
Use moisturiser for comfort and protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light, which can increase contrast between the mark and surrounding skin. Cosmetic camouflage may help for a special occasion. For longer-term improvement, a dermatologist may discuss microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling, or carboxytherapy after examining the area. These treatments target texture or colour rather than promising to recreate untouched skin, and several appointments may be considered.
When permanence is not the only question
Have new marks assessed if they appear quickly without an obvious explanation, are painful or inflamed, or come with easy bruising, weakness, or other body changes. Consultation is also sensible before a procedure if you have a history of raised scars, active infection, or a condition that affects healing.
Questions that clarify expectations
Ask whether your marks are still changing, what improvement is realistic, how many treatment visits may be advised, what downtime to plan for, and how your natural skin pigmentation affects aftercare.

Questions people ask
Do stretch marks ever fade on their own?
Yes. Their colour commonly softens as they mature, although a difference in texture may remain.
Is treatment worth considering for older marks?
It can be discussed if their appearance bothers you; a clinician will match the option to their texture, colour, and your skin characteristics.
