Stretch marks are a form of scar-like change caused by stretching and remodelling in the deeper skin. Newer marks may look red, purple or darker than nearby skin; older marks are often pale and slightly indented. They are not dirt or a sign that the skin is poorly cared for, and tanning can make the contrast more noticeable.

Start with a consultation so the clinician can identify the mark’s stage, depth and colour. Products marketed as erasers may moisturise or camouflage, but claims of complete removal deserve caution.

Seek a review when marks develop quickly without an obvious trigger, cover large areas, or occur with easy bruising, weakness or other body changes. Contact the treating clinic for worsening redness, heat, pain, swelling, blistering or drainage after a procedure. A new pattern can occasionally need medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment.

Ask what improvement is realistic for your marks, whether the proposed device suits your skin tone, how healing will look, and which sun-care instructions apply. Tell the clinician about active eczema, infection, pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines and previous raised scars.
