Stress-related hair loss in women

Short answer
Stress can shift more scalp hairs into a resting phase, causing diffuse shedding in women, although other medical causes should also be checked.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pattern
- Stress-related shedding is often diffuse across the scalp.
- Useful history
- Note illnesses, childbirth, diet changes and medicines before shedding began.
Understanding the shedding
Telogen effluvium often becomes noticeable after a demanding period, fever, operation, rapid weight change, childbirth or another bodily stress. Hair may come out across the scalp rather than in one sharply defined patch. You may notice extra strands during washing, brushing or on clothing, with the hairline sometimes appearing less full. The timing of a trigger and the distribution of loss help guide assessment, but they do not replace an examination.
Thyroid problems, iron deficiency, medicines, hormonal changes and scalp inflammation can resemble stress-related shedding. A clinician may review your health history and decide whether blood tests or a scalp examination are needed.
Helpful actions
Record when shedding began and any illness, pregnancy, diet change or major stress beforehand. Handle hair gently, avoid tight ponytails and repeated heat or chemical processing, and maintain regular meals with enough protein. Do not take high-dose supplements without advice. Depending on the findings, care may include Hair Supplement Therapy, Topical Minoxidil or PRP For Hair Loss.
When to arrange care
Book a review if shedding continues, becomes patchy, causes scalp pain or scale, or comes with fatigue, weight change, menstrual changes or unwanted facial hair. Seek prompt assessment for rapidly developing bald patches or a tender, inflamed scalp. Early evaluation can separate diffuse shedding from other forms of Hair Loss.
What to ask
Ask whether the pattern fits Telogen Effluvium, what trigger is most plausible, whether iron or thyroid testing is appropriate, and when improvement should be reassessed if shedding does not settle.
