How to stop post-nasal drip

Mucus made in the nose and sinuses can move down the back of the throat. This may cause throat clearing, a tickle, hoarseness, an unpleasant taste or cough, particularly when lying down. Allergic Rhinitis and a Common Cold can increase nasal mucus. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat in a similar way, so the sensation does not identify one cause by itself.

Drink water regularly and try saline spray or a saline rinse made with safe, prepared water. Keep the head slightly raised during sleep and avoid smoke or other known irritants. If allergies seem involved, a pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable treatment. Avoid repeatedly forcing the throat clear, which can add irritation. Persistent cough may need assessment for Asthma, Acute Bronchitis or another airway condition.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion or coughing blood. Arrange medical review for a cough that persists, recurrent wheezing, fever that is not settling, difficulty swallowing, facial swelling or foul-smelling discharge. Children with noisy breathing, poor feeding or unusual sleepiness need prompt assessment.
