What should you know about stop nose bleed?

Short answer
To stop a nosebleed, sit forward, pinch the soft part of your nose continuously, and breathe through your mouth.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Position
- Sit forward so blood does not run into the throat.
- Pressure
- Pinch the soft nose steadily while breathing through the mouth.
Why nosebleeds happen
Most nosebleeds start from delicate blood vessels near the front of the nasal passage. Dry air, nose picking, forceful blowing, minor injury, allergies, a common cold, or sinusitis can irritate this lining. Hypertension can be associated with nosebleeds, but a nosebleed does not by itself diagnose high blood pressure.
Bleeding from the front usually runs from one nostril. Blood going into the throat, repeated episodes, easy bruising, or use of blood-thinning medicine may need a clinician’s assessment.
What to do immediately
Sit upright and lean slightly forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose just below the bony bridge, keeping steady pressure while breathing through the mouth. Spit out blood rather than swallowing it. A cool cloth on the face may feel soothing, but do not tilt your head backwards or pack the nose with tissue.
After it stops, avoid nose blowing, picking, heavy exertion, hot drinks, and alcohol for a while. Saline spray or a suitable nasal moisturiser may help dryness; ask a pharmacist if you use nasal sprays or blood thinners.
When to seek medical care
Get urgent help if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes dizziness or weakness, makes breathing difficult, or does not settle with firm pressure. Arrange review for frequent nosebleeds, bleeding from both nostrils, unusual bruising, or a known bleeding disorder.
Questions to ask
Ask whether dryness, allergy, infection, blood pressure, or a medicine could be contributing, whether your nasal treatment is appropriate, and what to do if bleeding returns. Mention any blood-thinning medicine and recent injury.
