Short answer

A stomach virus can reduce appetite because nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach irritation make eating unappealing; focus first on fluids and small, gentle meals as you recover.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main priority
Replace fluids and monitor for dehydration.
Food approach
Restart with small portions of gentle foods as tolerated.
Get advice
Seek care for persistent symptoms, severe pain, bleeding, or inability to drink.

What the appetite change means

Loss of appetite is a common presentation of gastroenteritis, often called a stomach virus. The infection and the body’s inflammatory response can cause nausea, cramps, loose stools, vomiting, tiredness, and a temporary disinterest in food. Appetite may remain low briefly after vomiting or diarrhoea settles. The main concern is not missing a meal; it is becoming dehydrated or being unable to restart drinking and eating.

Other conditions can also cause poor appetite, including gastritis, peptic ulcer, hepatitis A, influenza, COVID-19, or depression. These conditions can have different accompanying symptoms, so a persistent or unexplained change deserves an assessment rather than being assumed to be a stomach virus.

What to do at home

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting makes drinking difficult, try a sip at a time and pause briefly before trying again. Once fluids stay down, choose small portions of plain foods such as toast, rice, bananas, soup, or yoghurt if tolerated. Eat slowly and stop if nausea returns; appetite can be rebuilt gradually.

Rest, wash your hands carefully, and avoid preparing food for other people while you have vomiting or diarrhoea. Avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen nausea. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with diabetes or other long-term conditions may need earlier advice because dehydration can become a concern sooner.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, black stools, or trouble breathing. Prompt medical advice is also needed when you cannot keep fluids down, urination becomes much less frequent, your mouth is very dry, or dizziness persists when standing.

Arrange a clinical review if appetite does not begin returning after the stomach illness improves, if vomiting or diarrhoea continues, or if weight loss, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or ongoing upper-abdominal pain develops. A clinician can check hydration, review medicines, and consider causes such as hepatitis A, gastritis, peptic ulcer, or pancreatic cancer when the pattern does not fit a short infection.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could my symptoms be gastroenteritis or another condition? How can I replace fluids safely? Which foods or medicines should I avoid? What signs mean I should seek urgent help? If my appetite stays low, what checks would help explain it?

Questions people ask

Should I force myself to eat with a stomach virus?

Do not force a full meal. Prioritise small sips of fluid, then try small portions when nausea eases and stop if eating triggers vomiting.

How do I know whether poor appetite needs medical advice?

Get medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, have dehydration symptoms, develop severe pain or bleeding, or remain unable to eat after the other stomach symptoms improve.
