Stomach acid reflux medicine: what to know

Antacids can neutralise acid for short-term relief. Alginates form a floating barrier that can reduce reflux after meals. Acid-reducing medicines, such as H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors, lower acid production and may be used when symptoms are more frequent. These treatments help Acid Reflux but do not treat every cause of Abdominal Pain, Cough or Chest Tightness. A Hiatus Hernia or Obesity may affect the pattern.

Read the label and follow the recommended timing; some medicines work best before food while others are taken when symptoms appear. Check with a pharmacist before combining products, especially if you take regular medicines, are pregnant, or have kidney or liver disease. Do not keep self-treating recurring symptoms without review. Smaller meals and avoiding lying down after eating can support treatment.

Book an assessment if medicine is needed repeatedly, stops helping, or symptoms return after stopping it. Seek urgent care for severe chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools or new difficulty swallowing. A persistent Cough or Difficulty Sleeping also deserves review when reflux treatment does not settle it.
