Types of stitches used in surgery

Sutures can be made from materials that the body gradually breaks down or from materials that remain until a clinician removes them. A stitch may be a single strand or a braided strand, and it may be placed in the skin, deeper tissue, or beneath the surface. Surgeons select the pattern and material to hold tissue together, control tension, reduce dead space, or support a delicate structure. The visible thread does not always show how much repair lies underneath.

Follow the wound-care plan for your particular operation rather than comparing your stitches with another person's. Keep the incision protected as directed, wash your hands before touching it, and avoid pulling, trimming, or testing the thread. Ask when bathing, exercise, lifting, and dressing changes are permitted. If a stitch catches on clothing, cover the area and contact the surgical team instead of cutting it yourself. Keep every review where removal or wound assessment is planned.

Contact your surgical team if the incision becomes more painful, red, hot, swollen, or wet, or if the edges begin to separate. Urgent assessment is needed for uncontrolled bleeding, sudden wound opening, severe pain, loss of function, or fever with a deteriorating incision. A clinician can decide whether a stitch is irritating tissue, has broken, or is associated with infection.

Ask what material and stitch pattern were used, whether the sutures dissolve, how long support is needed, and how removal or follow-up will be arranged.
