What should you know about still wheezing after nebulizer treatment?

Wheezing is a musical or whistling sound caused by narrowed airways. Asthma or COPD can flare when airway muscles tighten and the lining becomes inflamed. Acute Bronchitis may leave irritated airways after an infection. Allergic Rhinitis can add nasal symptoms and trigger cough or wheeze in some people. In children, Bronchiolitis is another possible cause. A nebuliser delivers medicine as a mist, but the response depends on the cause, the medicine used and the severity of the episode. Persistent wheezing does not identify one condition by itself.

Follow the written plan from the clinician who gave the Nebuliser Treatment, including any prescribed reliever or controller medicine. Sit upright, stay calm, avoid smoke and other known triggers, and have someone nearby if breathing is worsening. Do not repeat doses, borrow inhalers or delay assessment unless your prescribed plan specifically says to do so. Arrange a prompt review if wheezing returns soon, your reliever is less effective, or you are needing it more often than directed.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, exhaustion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Sudden wheezing with swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, vomiting or faintness may indicate Anaphylaxis and requires emergency treatment. Children who are struggling to feed, unusually sleepy or pulling in around the ribs need urgent assessment. Do not travel alone if breathing is significantly impaired.
