What should you know about stereotactic radiotherapy lung cancer?

A planning team uses scans to map the tumour and nearby structures. Because lungs move as you breathe, the plan may include breathing measurements, positioning aids or image checks before each session. Several beams can meet at the target, allowing the team to shape treatment around the tumour. It is delivered from outside the body and does not require an incision.

Suitability depends on tumour position, size and movement, lung function, previous treatments and the condition being treated. Possible effects include tiredness, cough, chest discomfort or inflammation in lung tissue. Effects may develop after treatment, so scheduled reviews and imaging help the team assess recovery.

Share your breathing history, medicines, oxygen use and previous radiation with the oncology team. Ask how to prepare for each visit and arrange support if you feel tired afterward. Track breathlessness, cough, pain and fever rather than relying on memory. Radiotherapy is also used in selected situations involving conditions such as Breast Cancer, Bowel Cancer or Head and Neck Cancer, but each plan is individual.

Contact the treatment service quickly if breathlessness is new or worsening, chest pain persists, you cough blood or you develop fever. Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, fainting, blue lips or sudden confusion. A gradual cough still deserves discussion when it changes after treatment.

Ask how breathing will be accounted for, which nearby organs need protection, how symptoms will be treated, when scans will be reviewed, and what other cancer treatments might be combined with or follow radiotherapy.
