What should you know about standing mri scanner?

A standing MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves rather than x-rays. Upright positioning can show how selected joints or the spine align when the body bears weight. It is not automatically a replacement for every standard MRI: the scanner's design determines which regions can be covered and how detailed the images are. A radiologist chooses the appropriate protocol for the question being investigated.

You must keep the requested body part still during each sequence. The equipment may be more open than a conventional tunnel, but it can still be noisy and may require repeated positions. Metal screening remains essential because the magnetic field can move or heat certain objects.

Give the centre a complete list of implants, metal fragments, medical devices and prior operations. Mention pregnancy, kidney disease and any previous contrast reaction. Wear clothing without metal and follow the centre's instructions. Ask whether standing is required throughout or only for part of the appointment, and tell the staff if pain, dizziness or weakness makes the position unsafe.

Tell staff at once if you feel dizzy, short of breath, trapped, overheated or unwell during imaging. After contrast, urgent symptoms such as facial swelling, breathing difficulty or faintness need immediate attention. A scan report may require comparison with earlier images or other tests, so contact the requesting clinician if the result or follow-up plan has not been explained.
