A positive result supports current COVID-19 infection, but a clinician may interpret it alongside symptoms, exposure and local testing advice. A negative result lowers the chance of infection at that moment but does not rule it out, particularly early in illness or when sampling is difficult. The test does not measure how severe illness will become and cannot identify every cause of cough, fever, fatigue, headache or feeling generally unwell. Long COVID describes symptoms that continue after the initial illness and needs separate assessment.

Follow the current advice from your healthcare provider and local public-health service about staying home, masking and repeat testing. Rest, drink fluids and use symptom relief that is safe for you. Tell a clinician if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, older, or have a long-term condition, because early assessment may matter. Avoid close contact with vulnerable people while unwell. A persistent cough or worsening symptoms deserves medical review even after a negative test.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to wake, blue or grey lips, or sudden deterioration. Arrange prompt medical assessment for dehydration, persistent fever, worsening weakness, or breathlessness during ordinary activity. Pneumonia can develop as a complication and may cause increasing cough, fever or breathing problems.
