What should you know about stages of telogen effluvium?

Short answer

Telogen effluvium is a hair-cycle response in which more hairs than usual enter the resting phase and later shed. The change is often noticed after an illness, operation, major stress, marked weight change, nutritional shortfall or hormonal shift. Shedding may start after the trigger has passed, which can make the cause difficult to recognise. The process usually develops over phases rather than overnight.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The phases of shedding and regrowth

First comes a trigger that disrupts the usual growth pattern. After a delay, increased shedding may appear during washing, brushing or on clothing. This is the active shedding phase and can make the scalp feel less full without creating smooth, sharply defined bald patches. As the cycle settles, daily shedding gradually becomes less noticeable. Short new hairs may then appear, although restoring density takes time because hair grows slowly.

The condition differs from permanent scarring hair loss, but another problem can occur at the same time. A clinician may examine the scalp and arrange tests when the pattern, symptoms or history suggest another cause.

What to do next

Write down when shedding began and what happened in the preceding months. Eat regular balanced meals, avoid crash dieting and handle hair gently while the scalp is shedding. Treating an underlying illness or deficiency is often more useful than chasing the shed hairs themselves. Hair Supplement Therapy should be considered only when a clinician identifies a reason for it.

Topical Minoxidil or PRP For Hair Loss may be discussed for selected people, but neither replaces a careful diagnosis. Avoid tight hairstyles, harsh chemical processing and vigorous brushing if they increase breakage or scalp discomfort.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology appointment for sudden or persistent Hair Loss, visible scalp inflammation, pain, scaling, broken hairs, smooth patches, or loss of eyebrows or body hair. Seek earlier assessment when shedding is accompanied by fatigue, weight change, menstrual disruption or other new symptoms. Prompt review can separate telogen effluvium from conditions that need different treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What trigger best fits the timing? Does the pattern look like telogen effluvium? Should I have blood tests? How can I protect my hair while it sheds? When should regrowth become visible? Would treatment for Thinning Hair be appropriate for me?

Questions people ask

Why does shedding begin after the stressful event?

The hair cycle can respond with a delay, so the trigger and the visible shedding do not always occur at the same time.

Does telogen effluvium cause smooth bald spots?

Usually it causes diffuse thinning rather than sharply outlined smooth patches; those patches need a clinical assessment.
