What should you know about stage of cough?

A cough may begin with a viral illness, irritation, mucus, allergy, asthma or acid reflux. A cough that continues after an infection can linger because the airways remain sensitive. A recurring or long-lasting cough needs a broader assessment for conditions such as chronic cough, bronchiectasis or airway disease. The sound alone does not identify the cause. Tell a clinician whether it is dry or phlegmy, worse at night or with exercise, linked to meals, and accompanied by wheezing, fever, breathlessness or weight change.

Record when the cough started and any triggers. Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a humidified environment if it feels soothing. Honey may help some adults and older children, but it is not suitable for infants. Check with a pharmacist before using cough medicines, especially for children, pregnancy or multiple medicines. A clinician may need to listen to your chest, review prescriptions and consider tests when the cough persists or keeps returning.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, chest pain or choking. Arrange prompt medical review for a cough with persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, repeated chest infections or worsening breathlessness. Babies, older adults and people with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment.

Ask what pattern your cough suggests, whether medicines or reflux could be contributing, how long to monitor it and which tests may be useful. Confirm which warning signs should lead you to seek urgent help.
