A pleural effusion is extra fluid between the layers around the lung. It can press on the lung and cause breathlessness, cough, chest heaviness, or reduced stamina. Doctors may use imaging and a fluid sample to clarify its cause. A malignant effusion supports advanced disease, but its size and presence do not provide an exact personal timeline. The team also considers whether the fluid returns after drainage and how the cancer behaves.

Your team may discuss draining fluid to ease breathing, treating the underlying cancer with chemotherapy or another suitable systemic option, and using palliative care alongside cancer treatment. Genomic tumour profiling can sometimes identify a treatment direction. Procedures and surgery are chosen according to the whole clinical picture, not the scan alone.

Seek emergency care for sudden or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, or inability to speak in short sentences. Call the oncology team promptly when breathlessness, cough, fever, or chest pressure is increasing, especially after a drainage procedure.
