Stage 4 lung cancer life expectancy with treatment

Stage 4 means the cancer has moved from the lung to another part of the body, or there are cancer cells in more than one area. The outlook depends on whether the cancer is small-cell or non-small-cell, where it has spread, how extensive it is, and whether testing finds changes that guide targeted treatment. Genomic tumour profiling may help the oncology team match treatment to features of the tumour. Your general health, breathing reserve, other illnesses and ability to continue treatment also matter.

Treatment may include medicines that travel through the bloodstream, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy. Radiotherapy can focus on a painful or troublesome area. Palliative care can be added at any stage to manage breathlessness, pain, fatigue, sleep and emotional strain; it does not mean that cancer treatment has stopped.

Ask for a clear treatment plan covering its aim, how response will be checked and what symptoms should prompt a call. Keep a record of breathlessness, pain, appetite, weight change, sleep and activity. Tell the team about supplements, medicines and any change in your ability to wash, dress or walk. A respiratory exercise plan, nutrition support and help with smoking cessation may improve comfort and treatment readiness. If a treatment causes troublesome effects, report them early so the team can adjust supportive medicines or the schedule.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue lips, new confusion, fainting, chest pressure, coughing up more than a small amount of blood, or an inability to keep fluids down. Contact the cancer team promptly for a new fever, worsening pain, marked weakness or symptoms that appear soon after treatment. Sudden headache, seizure, new weakness or trouble speaking needs urgent assessment because lung cancer can spread to the brain.
