Spotting in ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the womb, often in a fallopian tube. Spotting may be light, intermittent, or brown, and it can happen with lower abdominal or pelvic pain. Pelvic inflammatory disease and previous tubal problems can affect risk, but symptoms alone cannot establish the cause.

A pregnancy in an unusual location may not be visible on an early scan. Clinicians may compare pregnancy hormone blood tests over time and use a transvaginal ultrasound to locate the pregnancy. Seek advice even if the bleeding seems minor, because symptoms can change.

If you have a positive pregnancy test and spotting, contact a maternity or urgent-care service for assessment, especially if pain is present. Record the bleeding and pain pattern, including which side hurts and whether movement makes it worse. Use a pad rather than a tampon while waiting for advice.

Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are escalating. Assessment may involve examination, blood tests, and repeat imaging. Treatment depends on the pregnancy location, symptoms, scan findings, and your overall health; options can include medicine or surgery such as salpingectomy.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department for sudden or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, severe dizziness, or heavy bleeding. These signs may indicate internal bleeding. Urgent help is also appropriate if you feel weak, pale, breathless, or rapidly more unwell.

Ask where the pregnancy appears to be located, whether you need repeat blood tests or a transvaginal ultrasound, which symptoms mean emergency care, and how each treatment option could affect future pregnancy plans.
