Spots on the soft palate: what to know

The soft palate can become red or spotted after a hot-food burn, friction, dryness, or a viral illness. Sore throat, fever, swollen glands, cough, mouth ulcers, or a rash elsewhere can point toward infection or a broader inflammatory problem. White patches that wipe away, fixed white areas, bruising-like dots, and ulcers have different possible causes. Looking at the location and surface matters more than the colour alone.

Choose cool or lukewarm drinks and soft foods while the area is tender. Avoid smoking, alcohol-based mouthwash, spicy foods, and picking at the spots. Drink regularly and use a gentle oral-care routine. Note recent burns, new medicines, dental work, illness, or close contact with someone unwell. A doctor or dentist can inspect the palate and throat and arrange testing when the pattern suggests infection.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling, dehydration, or severe illness. Arrange an examination for unexplained bleeding-like spots, a persistent ulcer, a hard area, worsening pain, or changes that do not settle. Fever with a significant sore throat also warrants prompt assessment.

Ask whether the spots fit irritation, infection, or another mouth condition; whether a throat or mouth test is needed; and which foods, medicines, or products should be avoided during healing.
