Spots on the penile tip: what to know

Note whether the spots are smooth or raised, flesh-coloured or red, clustered or isolated, and whether they appeared after friction, a new product, shaving, or sexual contact. Burning during urination, discharge, ulcers, blisters, swelling, or marked tenderness makes infection or another condition more concerning. Small stable spots without discomfort can be a normal variation, but a photograph or examination is needed to distinguish that from a rash.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid fragranced soaps, antiseptics, squeezing, and unprescribed creams. Pause sexual contact until painful or changing lesions have been assessed, and use protection when contact resumes. Record when the spots began and any recent products, medicines, or partners; that history helps a clinician choose testing or treatment. Do not apply acne products designed for facial skin to the penile tip.

Arrange prompt medical care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, pus, fever, difficulty passing urine, open sores, blisters, or a lesion that bleeds. Seek assessment for any new spot that persists, changes, or follows possible sexual exposure. A clinician may inspect the skin and take a swab or urine test when symptoms suggest infection.

Ask whether the spots look like irritation, a normal anatomical feature, or an infection; whether testing is needed; which products should be avoided; and when sexual activity is safe.
