Spots from sun damage

Repeated ultraviolet exposure can leave flat brown macules, uneven tone, freckles, or areas that feel rough and sandpapery. Sun can also intensify post-inflammatory marks left after Pimples or other irritation. A rough, scaly patch differs from a smooth pigment spot and may need a different evaluation. The hands, face, scalp, ears, neck, and chest are commonly exposed, but a mark can occur anywhere that receives sunlight. Colour alone is not enough to confirm the cause.

Make sun protection part of daily care for exposed skin: use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed, seek shade, wear protective clothing, and avoid tanning devices. Do not scratch rough patches or try to burn, freeze, or peel a mark at home. A dermatologist may discuss prescription treatment or a procedure after examining the lesion and considering your skin tone, location, and tendency to develop darker marks. Treating visible pigment without protection can allow it to return.

Arrange a review for a spot that changes, becomes raised, develops a new colour, bleeds, crusts, itches persistently, or does not heal. A rough area on the scalp, ear, face, or hand deserves attention, especially when it is new or repeatedly irritated. Seek prompt care for rapid change or a sore that keeps reopening.
