What should you know about splinting in dentistry?

A dental splint may connect a mobile tooth to neighbouring teeth, often after an impact or when supporting tissues need time to recover. It can also refer to an appliance used for grinding or jaw-related symptoms, so the purpose should be stated clearly by the dentist. Splinting does not repair every cause of tooth movement. The dentist may assess the gums, bite, roots, supporting bone, and signs of infection before choosing it. A splint can feel unfamiliar and may alter cleaning or chewing.

Follow the dentist's instructions about eating, brushing, flossing, and review appointments. Clean around the splint carefully with the recommended brush, threader, or other aid so food does not collect along the gumline. Choose foods that do not pull or overload the joined teeth until advised otherwise. Do not loosen, cut, or remove the splint yourself. Contact the dental practice if it breaks, becomes sharp, traps food, or changes your bite.

Seek prompt dental care for increasing tooth pain, gum swelling, pus, fever, a loose or displaced tooth, or a splint that has detached. Urgent medical help is needed after facial trauma with heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, or loss of consciousness. A tooth that becomes darker, very sensitive, or increasingly loose after an injury also needs review.

Ask which tooth or teeth are being supported, what caused the movement, how long the splint is expected to remain, and how it will be checked. Confirm the cleaning method, foods to avoid, signs of infection, and what happens if the splint breaks or your bite feels different.
