What should you know about spanish influenza?

The term commonly describes the influenza pandemic that occurred in the early twentieth century. It does not mean that a person today has a special form of flu acquired from Spain. Influenza can cause fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell. Respiratory symptoms may overlap with other infections, and pneumonia can develop as a complication, so symptoms and examination guide the assessment.

Rest, drink fluids as tolerated and limit close contact while you are unwell. Cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands and improve ventilation in shared spaces. Follow local clinical advice about testing and antiviral treatment, especially if you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised or have a long-term medical condition. Do not use antibiotics unless a clinician prescribes them for a bacterial infection.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, or symptoms that improve and then suddenly worsen. Arrange prompt medical review for persistent fever, worsening cough, marked weakness or reduced alertness. Children, older adults and people with chronic conditions may need earlier assessment.
