Sore Itchy Scalp and Hair Loss: What to Know

Hair may break when scratching, tight styles, or inflamed scale weaken the shaft. Folliculitis can cause tender bumps around hairs. Scalp psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis can make the skin inflamed and encourage scratching. Smooth patches, broken hairs, pus, or a scaly expanding area may indicate a condition such as scalp infection. Itch and hair loss occurring together do not identify one diagnosis by themselves.

Handle the hair gently, avoid tight hairstyles and chemical processing, and do not pick at crusts or pull loose hairs. Take a clear photograph of the scalp if the appearance changes between appointments. Do not share hair tools or headwear if lice or infection is possible. Treatment may involve medicated shampoo therapy, head-lice treatment, or prescription care after examination.

Arrange a dermatology review for new patchy loss, persistent shedding with scalp symptoms, broken hairs, or painful bumps. Seek prompt care for pus, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, or severe tenderness. Earlier assessment is especially useful when a child has a scaly patch or when several household members itch.

Ask whether the loss is shedding, breakage, or follicle-related, and whether the scalp needs testing. Share when the symptoms began, how quickly the hair changed, styling habits, family history, recent illness, and every product or medicine used.
