Sore Itchy Bumps on the Scalp: What They May Mean

Small tender bumps around individual hairs may fit folliculitis, while greasy scale can occur with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Thick, clearly defined plaques may point toward scalp psoriasis. Intense itch with visible nits or insects raises concern for head lice. Scratching can make any of these problems more sore and can cause crusting.

Avoid picking, squeezing, or scraping the bumps, and pause new hair dyes, oils, and fragranced products until the scalp settles. Wash gently and use a clean towel; do not share brushes, hats, or pillowcases if lice is possible. A clinician can match treatment to the cause, including a medicated shampoo or specific head-lice treatment when appropriate.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the bumps spread, drain, form thick crusts, cause patchy hair loss, or do not improve with gentle care.
