Sore breasts after menopause: the short answer

Sore breasts after menopause can have several causes, so new, persistent, or one-sided pain deserves a clinical assessment. Hormone therapy, other medicines, chest-wall strain, dry or irritated skin, and benign breast changes may all be relevant. Pain alone does not establish a diagnosis.

What the soreness may mean

After menopause, breast pain is less often linked to a regular menstrual cycle, but breast tissue can still respond to hormone treatment or changing hormone levels. The discomfort may feel tender, burning, pulling, or aching, and it may affect one breast or both. A bra that rubs, recent exercise, or pain from the ribs and muscles can be felt in the breast. Infection is more concerning when soreness comes with warmth, redness, swelling, fever, or fluid from the nipple.

What you can do now

Note when the pain began, where it is, whether it is constant, and any medicines or hormone products you use. Check gently for a new lump, skin change, nipple inversion, or discharge, without repeatedly pressing the area. A well-fitting supportive bra, avoiding friction, and a warm or cool pack may ease discomfort. Do not stop prescribed hormone treatment or another medicine without discussing it with the prescriber. A clinician may examine the breast and decide whether imaging or another test is appropriate.

When to seek care

Arrange an appointment for pain that is new, lasts beyond a short period, keeps returning, or is focused in one area. Seek prompt medical care for redness with fever, rapidly increasing swelling, pus, a bloody nipple discharge, a newly inverted nipple, skin dimpling, or a firm new lump. Urgent assessment is also sensible if severe pain follows an injury or is accompanied by chest pressure or trouble breathing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your medicines or hormone therapy could contribute, whether the pain seems to come from the breast or chest wall, and what examination or imaging you need. Mention any family history, previous breast procedures, nipple changes, fever, or recent injury.
