Short answer

To soothe acid reflux, choose smaller meals, stay upright after eating, avoid personal triggers, and seek care for persistent or severe symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger pattern
Symptoms may worsen after meals or when lying down.
Useful first step
Keep a brief diary of meals, timing and symptoms.
Urgent warning
Severe chest discomfort or vomiting blood needs urgent help.

What acid reflux can feel like

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move back towards the food pipe. It may cause a burning sensation behind the breastbone, a sour taste, repeated burping, cough or discomfort after meals. Symptoms can be worse when bending or lying down. A hiatus hernia or excess abdominal pressure can make reflux easier to trigger, while a chronic cough may both follow and aggravate irritation.

Symptoms that resemble reflux can have other causes. Chest tightness, abdominal pain or breathing difficulty should not be assumed to be reflux, especially when they are sudden, intense or unfamiliar.

Practical ways to reduce symptoms

Try eating slowly and choosing modest portions. Notice whether fatty meals, spicy foods, acidic drinks, caffeine, chocolate or mint bring symptoms on, then reduce the triggers that affect you rather than avoiding every food automatically. Leave time between eating and lying down, and raise the upper body during sleep if night symptoms continue. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen and discuss weight-related reflux with a clinician without pursuing rapid or restrictive changes.

A pharmacist or doctor can explain whether an antacid, alginate or other reflux medicine fits your symptoms and other medicines. Follow the product directions, and arrange a review if you need frequent relief.

When to get medical help

Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, cause difficulty swallowing, lead to vomiting, or continue despite sensible changes. Seek urgent help for severe or crushing chest discomfort, faintness, marked breathlessness, vomiting blood or black stools. A clinician can distinguish reflux from heart or digestive problems and check ongoing irritation.

Questions to take to an appointment

Ask what pattern best fits your symptoms, whether a medicine review is needed, how long self-care should be tried, and whether persistent cough or night symptoms need further assessment.
