Short answer

Snoring through the nose often reflects narrowed or congested nasal passages, but persistent symptoms need a broader airway assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why nasal breathing may sound noisy

Airflow becomes noisy when the nasal passages are narrowed by swelling, mucus, a structural difference or irritation. Allergic Rhinitis may cause congestion, sneezing and an itchy nose, while Chronic Sinusitis can bring ongoing blockage, facial pressure or reduced smell. Nasal snoring can also continue when the nose feels open because vibration farther back in the throat contributes to the sound.

Snoring alone does not establish a diagnosis. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea should be considered when a bed partner notices pauses, gasping or repeated awakenings, especially if you feel unrefreshed or sleepy during the day.

Ways to improve nasal airflow

Notice whether symptoms follow dust, pets, seasonal exposure, infection or lying flat. Saline rinsing may clear mucus when used correctly with safe water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a nasal spray is suitable; do not keep using a decongestant spray beyond its instructions because congestion can rebound. Side sleeping, regular sleep times and avoiding alcohol near bedtime may also reduce noisy breathing. Treating the cause is more useful than masking the sound.

When assessment matters

Book an appointment if nasal snoring lasts beyond a short illness, affects sleep, occurs mainly on one side, or comes with recurrent nosebleeds, facial pain or reduced smell. Seek prompt help for severe difficulty breathing. Ask for review if there are witnessed breathing pauses, choking episodes, morning headaches or daytime sleepiness, as these features can point to a sleep-related breathing disorder.

Questions for your doctor

Is my nose blocked by allergy, sinus disease or a structural problem? Which nasal treatment fits my symptoms? Should I be assessed for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea if my partner hears pauses?

Questions people ask

Does nasal snoring mean the problem is only in the nose?

No. Nasal blockage can increase resistance, but vibration in the throat may also contribute.

Can saline rinsing stop snoring?

It may ease mucus-related blockage for some people, but ongoing snoring needs assessment for other causes.
