What should you know about snoring decibels?

Short answer
A snoring decibel reading describes sound at one moment, but it cannot show whether breathing is blocked or whether sleep apnoea is present.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a sound reading means
A decibel is a way of describing sound intensity. Phone apps and home recordings can be affected by microphone distance, room noise, bedding, and the device itself, so readings are useful for noticing patterns rather than diagnosing a condition. A louder recording may reflect a narrower airway, but a quiet sleeper can still have interrupted breathing.
The clinical clues that matter include witnessed pauses, choking or gasping, restless sleep, morning headache, and daytime sleepiness. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea presents with disrupted airflow during sleep, not simply with a particular sound level. Nasal swelling from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can change the sound without being the only cause.
How to use recordings
If you record snoring, note the date, sleeping position, congestion, alcohol intake, and whether pauses or gasps were heard. Share the pattern with a clinician rather than treating the number as a pass-or-fail result. Side sleeping and addressing nasal congestion may reduce vibration. If weight is contributing, discuss a Weight Management Programme. Do not use a recording to rule out sleep apnoea or delay a review when someone notices breathing interruptions.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment for persistent disruptive snoring, a clear change in breathing, or daytime tiredness that affects driving, work, or concentration. Seek prompt assessment for repeated pauses, gasping, morning headaches, or difficult-to-control sleepiness. Get urgent help for severe breathlessness while awake, chest pain, blue lips, or confusion.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your recording suggests a need for sleep testing, whether nasal symptoms need treatment, and which changes should be tried while assessment is arranged.

Questions people ask
Can a phone app diagnose sleep apnoea?
No. An app may help document sound or patterns, but diagnosis depends on clinical assessment and, when needed, sleep monitoring.
Does louder snoring mean a more serious problem?
Not necessarily. Sound varies with recording conditions, while pauses, gasping, and daytime sleepiness are more meaningful warning signs.
