Short answer

Smoking may affect nutrition and the body’s handling of nutrients, but vitamin deficiency requires a clinical history and appropriate blood tests rather than assumptions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Uses symptoms, history and targeted blood tests

Do not self-treat persistent neurological symptoms with supplements

Understanding the link

Smoking can reduce appetite for some people, change food routines and expose the body to substances that increase physiological stress. These factors may contribute to an unbalanced diet, but they do not identify a particular deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also relate to absorption problems, restricted diets or other medical conditions.

Low B12 may contribute to Anaemia, tiredness, dizziness, weakness, altered sensation or memory problems. Coeliac Disease and other absorption disorders may need consideration. Peripheral Neuropathy can have several causes, so numbness or burning should not be self-diagnosed as a vitamin problem.

A sensible assessment

Tell a clinician how much you smoke, what you eat, whether you take supplements and whether you have digestive symptoms. They may choose blood tests based on your symptoms and history. Avoid high-dose supplements without advice: they can mask another problem, interact with medicines or delay the correct diagnosis.

Aim for varied meals containing suitable sources of protein and fortified foods where appropriate, and make a quit-smoking plan. If fatigue, dizziness or weakness is affecting daily life, arrange an appointment rather than treating the symptom with a supplement alone.

When to seek care

Book a prompt review for worsening fatigue, persistent dizziness, weakness, tingling, balance difficulty, sore tongue or changes in memory. Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided weakness, new trouble speaking, fainting, severe breathlessness or chest pain. Sudden neurological symptoms are emergencies and should not be attributed to deficiency.

Questions for your doctor

Which deficiency tests fit my symptoms and diet? Could absorption, anaemia or another condition be involved? Should I stop or change any supplement? What support can help me stop smoking while improving my meals?
