What should you know about smear test instrument?

Short answer

A smear test uses a speculum to view the cervix and a soft brush to collect cells for laboratory examination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Which instruments are used

A speculum is gently placed in the vagina so the clinician can see the cervix. It may be plastic or metal, and it comes in different sizes. A small brush or sampling device then gathers cells from the cervix; the device is removed after collection. The sample is placed in a container or on a slide for laboratory review. The brush does not enter the womb.

How to make the test easier

Tell the clinician if you have pain, pelvic floor tension, previous difficult examinations, or a history of trauma. You can ask for a smaller speculum, a different position, a pause, or an explanation before each step. Relaxed breathing can reduce muscle tightening. Avoid vaginal products and intercourse before the appointment if your clinic advises this, and ask how to prepare if you are bleeding or pregnant.

When to seek care

Mild pressure or brief spotting can occur after sampling. Contact the clinic for persistent pain, unusual discharge, fever, or bleeding that is heavier or lasts longer than expected. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or difficulty breathing, whether or not these symptoms began during the examination.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which speculum size will be used, whether you can control pauses, and what the brush collection will feel like. Ask how results are reported and whether an HPV test or colposcopy may be part of follow-up.

Questions people ask

Does the brush enter the womb?

No. It collects cells from the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus.

Can I request a different instrument?

You can discuss a smaller speculum, positioning, and pauses with the clinician before the examination begins.
