Small pimples on the face: what should you know?

Acne commonly includes blocked pores such as blackheads or whiteheads alongside inflamed pimples. Folliculitis produces bumps around hairs and may follow shaving, sweating, or friction. Perioral dermatitis tends to cluster around the mouth, while rosacea may involve flushing, persistent redness, burning, or eye symptoms. Cosmetics, hair products, masks, phones, and picking can aggravate facial skin. A photograph and brief history can help a clinician compare these patterns, but a face-wide label is not a diagnosis.

Wash with a gentle cleanser, use lukewarm water, and pat rather than rub. Select non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen if tolerated, and remove makeup before sleep. Clean makeup tools and items that touch the face. Avoid squeezing, rough exfoliation, fragranced products, and changing several treatments at once. If burning, scaling, or flushing accompanies the bumps, stop irritating products and obtain advice before applying strong acne treatments or steroid creams.

Book a dermatology review for persistent, recurring, deep, painful, or scarring facial lesions, or when the diagnosis is unclear. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, fever, marked warmth, or eye pain or vision changes. Sudden facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty requires urgent help.
