Small lump on neck below ear: what to know

A small lump below the ear can have several causes, and its location alone cannot identify the cause. Nearby lymph nodes may enlarge during an infection affecting the ear, throat, teeth, or skin. A salivary-gland problem, cyst, or other non-cancerous change is also possible. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, but that direction does not apply here: a neck lump is not evidence that a person has cancer.

Note whether the lump is in front of or behind the ear, just under the jaw, or farther down the neck. Record whether it feels soft or firm, moves under the skin, changes size, or comes with tenderness. Recent sore throat, ear symptoms, dental trouble, shaving irritation, or a skin infection can provide useful context. A clinician may examine the ears, mouth, throat, skin, salivary glands, and lymph-node areas, then decide whether imaging or a sample is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help if swelling causes trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increases, or is accompanied by severe illness. Arrange prompt medical review for a lump that is hard, fixed, repeatedly enlarging, or associated with voice change, persistent throat discomfort, unexplained weight change, night sweating, or ongoing fever. These features need assessment because they can arise from several conditions, not because they prove cancer.
