Small bumps at the back of the neck: what they can mean

Short answer
Small bumps at the back of the neck are often related to skin or lymph tissue, but a persistent, growing, or firm lump needs clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a neck bump may represent
A bump may be a blocked skin gland, an inflamed hair follicle, a cyst, or a lymph node reacting to infection near the scalp, throat, or ears. Lymph nodes can feel tender during an infection and may settle after the illness improves. A hard, fixed, enlarging, or unexplained lump can have other causes, including conditions affecting the head and neck, thyroid, or lymphatic system. A lump alone cannot identify its cause.
The clinician may examine the skin, mouth, throat, thyroid, and nearby lymph-node groups. Depending on the findings, assessment can include imaging or a sample of cells. A neck lump can be associated with [Head and Neck Cancer](/conditions/head-and-neck-cancer/), [Lymphoma](/conditions/lymphoma/), or [Thyroid Cancer](/conditions/thyroid-cancer/), but these links do not mean that every bump is cancer.
What you can do now
Note when the bump appeared, whether it changes in size, and whether it is painful, mobile, or attached to deeper tissue. Check for recent skin irritation, sore throat, dental symptoms, or scalp infection. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it, because that can irritate the area. Arrange a medical appointment if it remains, returns, or changes, taking a list of medicines and recent illnesses.
If the location is near the thyroid or the clinician recommends surgery, [Thyroid Removal Surgery](/treatments/surgical-oncology/thyroidectomy/) is one possible treatment in selected conditions.
When to seek prompt care
Seek prompt medical advice for a lump that grows, becomes hard or fixed, persists without an obvious infection, or occurs with unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, prolonged fever, or unusual tiredness. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, sudden weakness, or rapidly increasing swelling.
Questions to ask
Ask what tissue the bump seems to involve, whether nearby lymph nodes or the thyroid need checking, how long observation is reasonable, and whether imaging or sampling is appropriate. Mention any voice change, swallowing difficulty, fever, or recent infection.
Questions people ask
Do small neck bumps always indicate cancer?
No. Infection, cysts, and skin conditions are also possible. A persistent or changing bump still deserves an examination.
Should I squeeze a bump?
No. Squeezing can irritate skin and does not establish the cause; monitor changes and arrange assessment when needed.
