Small brown spots: what they may mean

Flat, evenly coloured marks may be leftover pigmentation after pimples, bites, rubbing, or a rash. A raised spot, a rough surface, scale, or a mark centred on a hair follicle suggests a different process and may need a closer look. Location, duration, recent sun exposure, medicines, and whether several spots appeared together all help distinguish possibilities. Colour alone is not a diagnosis.

Photograph the area in good light and record whether each spot is flat, raised, itchy, sore, or changing. Use broad-spectrum sun protection on exposed skin, avoid picking and abrasive exfoliation, and moisturise if the surrounding skin is dry. Do not apply strong lightening or steroid products without guidance, since irritation can make pigmentation more prominent.

Book a skin check for a spot that changes in shape, border, colour, size, or sensation, or one that repeatedly crusts or bleeds. Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly evolving lesion, a painful ulcer, or a mark with significant surrounding redness or swelling. Sudden widespread spots with fever or feeling unwell also need timely medical advice.
