What should you know about slight pins and needles in hands?

Tingling may appear after sleeping on an arm, leaning on an elbow or holding a wrist in one position. It should ease as pressure is removed. Recurrent symptoms can involve a nerve at the wrist, neck or elbow. Other possible contributors include peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency and hypothyroidism.

Fast breathing during panic disorder or generalised anxiety disorder can also cause tingling around the hands or mouth. Tingling alone cannot identify its cause, so note which fingers are affected, whether one or both hands are involved, and whether weakness or pain occurs.

Change position, gently move the fingers and wrist, and avoid leaning on the elbow or keeping the wrist bent for long periods. Check whether repetitive work, tools or tight clothing triggers the sensation. Do not apply heat to an area with reduced sensation because burns may go unnoticed. Arrange a routine review if episodes recur, last longer, affect sleep or come with weakness.

Call emergency services for sudden one-sided tingling or numbness with facial drooping, arm weakness, speech trouble, severe dizziness or loss of balance; these can occur with stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Get urgent advice for rapidly spreading symptoms, new severe weakness, loss of bladder control or symptoms after a major injury. Do not drive yourself if neurological symptoms are sudden.

Which nerves or body positions could explain this pattern? Should blood tests check glucose, thyroid function or vitamin B12? Would examination or nerve testing help, and what changes should prompt urgent care?
