What should you know about skin tags on eye lids?

A skin tag, also called an acrochordon or fibroepithelial polyp, may appear as a small flesh-coloured or slightly darker flap attached by a narrow base. Eyelid skin is delicate, so a tag can catch on glasses, makeup, or fingers and become irritated. Its position can make it look similar to a mole, wart, cyst, or another eyelid lesion; appearance alone is not enough for a reliable diagnosis.

Do not cut, tie off, burn, or apply wart-removal products near the eye. Avoid rubbing the area and pause products that repeatedly sting it. A dermatologist or eye specialist can inspect the base and discuss whether observation is reasonable or whether removal suits your symptoms and cosmetic concerns. Options may include clinician-performed skin tag removal, cryotherapy, or electrosurgery, selected according to the lesion and its distance from the eye.

Arrange an assessment if the growth changes quickly, bleeds without rubbing, develops a sore, becomes persistently painful, or is difficult to distinguish from a pigmented lesion. Seek prompt eye care for vision changes, marked swelling, severe redness, or discharge. These features do not identify a cause by themselves, but they deserve direct examination.
