Skin Tag on Chin: What to Know

A skin tag is usually a soft growth that may hang from the skin or have a short, broad base. On the chin, shaving, mask straps, cosmetics and frequent touching can make it snag or become inflamed. The location does not establish the diagnosis: acne-related bumps, cysts, warts and moles can look different but may be mistaken for a tag.

A clinician will consider when it appeared, whether it has changed, and whether it bleeds or hurts. A changing facial lesion deserves assessment before any cosmetic treatment.

Arrange an examination if the growth is new, bothersome or uncertain. If it is confirmed as a skin tag, treatment may involve freezing, controlled heat or careful removal after numbing the skin. Avoid cutting it with scissors or using over-the-counter wart preparations on the chin, since nearby healthy skin can be injured. Keep any treated area clean and protect it from friction and strong sun during healing.

Seek a prompt assessment for rapid enlargement, a new dark or uneven area, spontaneous bleeding, persistent crusting or a sore that does not settle. Following removal, call the clinic if pain, warmth, swelling, redness or discharge is increasing rather than easing, or if you develop fever.
