Skin Tag in the Mouth or Cheek: What to Know

A clinician or dentist may consider an irritation fibroma, a blocked minor salivary gland, a blister, a wart, or another oral lesion. The texture, colour, exact location, and duration help guide assessment. A lesion that persists, becomes firm, ulcerates, or changes cannot be identified reliably from a description alone. A dental examination may also find a sharp tooth or filling that keeps rubbing the cheek.

Rinse gently with water or a mild salt-water solution, avoid biting the area, and choose softer foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Check whether a tooth edge, denture, or dental appliance is rubbing it, but do not modify the appliance yourself. Arrange a dentist or clinician visit if it lasts, recurs, or interferes with eating. Removal, if needed, should be planned for the oral site; treatments such as cryotherapy or electrosurgery are not home procedures.

Seek prompt dental or medical review for a sore that does not heal, unexplained bleeding, a firm or enlarging lump, colour change, numbness, persistent pain, or difficulty swallowing. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, rapidly increasing swelling, or bleeding that will not stop with gentle pressure. These warning signs call for assessment and do not by themselves determine the cause.

Ask whether a tooth or appliance is causing trauma, whether the growth needs monitoring or sampling, which specialist should manage it, and what foods or mouth-care steps will protect the area while it settles.
