Skin Signs of Dengue

Dengue may cause a widespread red or blotchy rash that can appear as fever settles, as well as flushing of the face. Tiny red or purple spots that do not fade when pressed, easy bruising, or bleeding from the nose or gums are more concerning. A rash can have many causes, so clinicians also consider fever, headache, chills, joint pain, and muscle aches and may arrange testing based on the illness pattern and travel or mosquito exposure.

Contact a clinician promptly if dengue is possible, especially after travel or residence in an area where it circulates. Rest, take fluids in small frequent amounts, and record temperature and changes in the rash. Ask which fever medicine is suitable; avoid starting aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician says it is appropriate, because bleeding may be a concern. A GP consultation can help assess the full symptom pattern.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, marked drowsiness or restlessness, breathing difficulty, faintness, cold clammy skin, or inability to drink. Urgent review is also needed for rapidly increasing bruising or many new non-blanching spots. Symptoms can become more serious around the time a fever improves, so do not use the temperature alone to judge risk.

Ask whether your rash needs testing, which medicines and fluids are suitable, what warning signs to monitor, and when to return for review. Tell the clinician about travel, mosquito bites, bleeding, and all medicines you have taken.
