What should you know about skin IPL laser hair removal?

Short answer
IPL and laser hair removal use light energy to heat follicles, reducing hair growth while requiring careful skin assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance

- Hair colour, skin tone, tanning and medicines
- Aftercare
- Sun protection and gentle care of treated skin
IPL versus laser treatment
IPL uses a broad range of light wavelengths, while a laser delivers a more focused wavelength. Both target pigment in the hair shaft and follicle; the heat can reduce the follicle’s ability to produce hair. Hair colour, thickness, skin tone, tanning and the body area affect which device and settings may be appropriate.
Temporary redness, swelling around follicles or a warm sensation can occur. Rarely, skin colour can become lighter or darker, especially when skin is recently tanned or settings are unsuitable. Hair reduction is gradual because follicles respond differently across their growth cycles.
Preparing for treatment
Have a trained practitioner assess your skin and hair before treatment. Disclose tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, active skin disease, scarring tendency and previous reactions. Follow instructions about shaving and sun protection; do not wax or pluck if the clinic needs the follicle available for targeting.
After treatment, protect the area from sun, avoid picking irritated follicles and use only the recommended soothing products. Persistent ingrown hairs or razor bumps may need a separate plan.
When to seek medical advice
Contact the provider for blistering, crusting, severe pain, spreading redness, pus or a colour change that persists. Seek assessment before further sessions if an area becomes infected or if new lumps, draining areas or recurrent inflammation appear.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether IPL or a specific laser suits your skin tone and hair, how tanning changes the plan, what preparation is required, how settings are tested, and which reaction means treatment should stop.

Questions people ask
Is IPL the same as laser hair removal?
No. IPL uses a broad light range, while laser hair removal uses a focused wavelength; both can heat hair follicles.
Can hair removal help ingrown hairs?
Reducing regrowth may help some people who develop ingrown hairs, but persistent or infected bumps need medical assessment.
