Skin allergy swelling treatment: what to know

Allergic swelling can affect the lips, eyelids, hands, feet, or other areas and may occur with raised itchy welts called hives. Angioedema is deeper swelling beneath the skin and can become urgent when the tongue or throat is involved. Cellulitis is different: it often causes a local area that is hot, tender, red, and progressively expanding, sometimes with fever. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause, so the timing, speed of change, possible trigger, pain, itch, and general symptoms matter.

Remove a suspected new product or food from further exposure, but do not stop a prescribed medicine unless a clinician tells you to. Rest the swollen area if comfortable, avoid scratching, and keep a record of what happened before the swelling began. A healthcare professional may recommend an antihistamine for allergic symptoms or other treatment based on the cause. Do not rely on home treatment when swelling is rapidly increasing or the mouth and throat are involved.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly spreading swelling. Seek same-day assessment for painful hot redness, fever, pus, red streaking, or swelling that continues to expand, because these features can suggest cellulitis. Arrange medical review for recurrent episodes, unexplained swelling, or swelling that follows a medicine or procedure.

Ask whether the pattern is more consistent with hives, angioedema, cellulitis, or another cause. Discuss triggers, medicines to keep available, warning signs for your household to recognise, and whether recurrent episodes need allergy or dermatology assessment.
