What should you know about site of rabies vaccine?

For most people, rabies vaccine is injected into the upper arm muscle. Young children may receive it in the outer thigh when clinically appropriate. It should not be injected into the buttock because absorption may be less reliable. The site can be sore, red, or mildly swollen for a short time. Rabies is a serious infection that can follow saliva exposure from an infected animal, particularly through a bite or broken skin. A vaccine-site question should therefore be considered alongside the type of contact and the animal involved.

Wash a bite, scratch, or saliva-contaminated wound thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible, without scrubbing deeply or sealing the wound. Seek urgent medical assessment even when the wound looks small. A clinician will assess whether Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis is needed, including vaccine and, for some exposures, rabies immunoglobulin. Do not wait for symptoms or rely on observing the animal unless public-health professionals advise this. Bring details of the animal, location, time, and contact, plus any vaccination record.

Seek urgent care immediately after a bite, scratch, or saliva contact with broken skin or the eyes, mouth, or nose from a potentially infected mammal. Go promptly if the animal is stray, unavailable for observation, behaving unusually, or the exposure occurred while travelling. Emergency assessment is also needed for heavy bleeding, deep wounds, injuries to the face or hand, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, pus, or fever.
